These appointments can feel uneasy and make you feel anxious but I felt reassured and in professional hands the whole time Helen Campbell I saw Kate throughout my first pregnancy and am now doing so again with my second. She is absolutely amazing, she explains everything really clearly, and has answered all sorts of bizarre questions and worries I have had.

On top of being clinically excellent she is also just the loveliest person and always a pleasure to see.

Early scan today showed a tiny (2mm) empty sac in the womb, no visible yolk sac or fetal pole as it’s so tiny. The lady wasn’t sure what to tell me, other than it was inconclusive. They’ve done bloods etc and I may need another scan next week.

Alamy By Nicola Harley 9: A study by Imperial College London has revealed that doctors should wait a further two weeks to carry out a second scan to confirm whether a pregnancy is viable rather than a week. Pregnant women who experience pain or bleeding in the first trimester are usually referred to an early pregnancy clinic for a scan. A second scan is often performed around seven days later to confirm whether a pregnancy is viable.

Following the second scan, a decision may be taken to end the pregnancy by surgery or medication, or to let the miscarriage progress naturally. The new research, published in the British Medical Journal BMJ , said there was a risk healthy pregnancies could be ended because not enough time has passed between the scans. Professor Tom Bourne, from Imperial College London, who led the study, said doctors could be confident their diagnosis was correct if scans were 14 days apart.

Implants given to thousands of patients suspended over contamination fears The current guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Nice of seven days between scans was associated with a “false positive” rate – where the diagnosis is wrong – approaching two per cent, the study found. It’s an area of medicine where the highest levels of caution are warranted. The new research is based on a study of 2, women who attended early pregnancy clinics across London because of pain, bleeding, severe morning sickness or because they had previously experienced miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy.

The team is now calling on Nice and the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology to update their guidelines on the issue.

Share this article Share But if the foetus or sac is not unusually small, for example if the sac is over 2cm, just one scan is done before the woman is told she has lost her baby. She then has the option of waiting to miscarry naturally, taking pills to induce the miscarriage or surgical removal. But experts say the 2cm cut-off point between having one scan and two is too risky. A study of more than 1, British women estimated that around one in who are deemed to have miscarried because they have an apparently empty gestational sac of over 2cm will actually still be pregnant.

Empty Sack at firtst ultrasound. old thread but I just wanted to jump in and encourage others to wait a few weeks after a doctor tells you there is an empty sac. My doctor told me I had an empty sac at 7 weeks and 11 days later baby was there, heart beating good. Ultrasounds are .

This is my 3rd pregnancy and looks like will be my 3rd loss. I told myself after my scan yesterday that I shouldnt be hopeful but my head and heart disagree. Yesterday I was 6w exactly based on ovulation and we only saw an empty sac. My hcg and progesterone levels are normal which I know can be the case with a blighted ovum. The doctor said there is still hope your dates could be off but I know my dates exactly so it can’t be that.

Just wondered if anyone else had an empty sac and gone on to see a baby and were sure of their dates.

Dating and viability What is a dating scan? A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Dating scans also reveal other important information such as: Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures.

She is now a year old on Sunday and since giving birth I have had 3 periods, so when my pregnancy test came back positive on August 25 th we were so excited but I did not know how far along I was because my cycle is so so unpredictable. I decided to go to a private ultrasound and was told I was probably only about 5 weeks and she could only see a sac, so I decided to come back a week later to see how things would progress.

A week later I returned and as she was doing my scan I could see the sac was much larger but it was empty. She proceeded to tell us that it was likely a blighted ovum and what my options would be and how sorry she was, she proceeded to tell us about her own miscarriages. To us, this really felt that it must be over. We both left crying, we were heartbroken. I went to my doctor the following Monday, my doctor said she does not trust those private ultrasounds and that a proper vaginal ultrasound at the hospital was the only way to know for sure, she tested my hcg and it was as she said very very good and rising went from 27, , within a couple days.

I have felt depressed these past couple weeks being in limbo and not knowing if we have a baby or not. I have no spotting bleeding or cramping at all, but I also have hardly any symptoms unlike my first pregnancy where I was a complete wreck with every symptom under the sun. I am so confused and angry at myself for getting such an early scan. I am also angry with the private ultrasound lady who had us grieve a loss that may not be a loss.

Depending on when in your pregnancy it takes place, a TVS can be used to: See whether you’re pregnant with one or more babies Check that your pregnancy is progressing normally in the uterus Evaluate the reason for any abdominal pain, spotting or bleeding Rule out an ectopic pregnancy Sometimes a TVS is done for non-medical reasons, for example to date your pregnancy if you are not sure about the first day of your last menstrual cycle.

How should I prepare for a TVS? Many women find a vaginal scan more comfortable than an abdominal one , because you don’t need a full bladder during the procedure! You will need an empty bladder for this scan because a full bladder can get in the way of a clear picture of your baby. A nurse will ask you to use the restroom while you are waiting for your scan. You will also need to undress from the waist down for a TVS.
